| The Eucalyptus tree makes up nearly 3/4 of Australia's total number of plant species. Early botanists In the late 1700s, started describing the more than 500 species of eucalyptus trees. There are still varieties and hybrids that are yet to be discovered today. The name Eucalyptus comes from the Greek eu, meaning "well", and kalyptos, meaning "cover", referring to the well-covered flower buds. The flowers are cone shaped and have a lid-like structure that opens as the flowers mature. Eucalyptus is used for it's oil by aromatherapists and in over the counter preparations for hundreds of cold and flu remedies like cough drops, chest rubs, and cough medicine. Besides being used for medicinal purposes Eucalyptus is also used in the industrial market and as perfumery oils (E.citrodora) as well. Eucalyptus is distilled in Australia, Tasmania, Brazil, China, India Portugal, Russia, Spain, and the U.S.. The Eucalyptus trees exude a sticky tannin_rich substance called kino that has astringent properties which is why it has medicinal qualities. The medicinal quality of Eucalyptus oil is measured by it's cineol content. cineol, also known as eucalyptol is the chemical compound in the oil that has medicinal qualities and is known for its anti-viral and expectorant properties. Eucalyptus oil that has low cineol content has poor medicinal qualities and should have at least a 1.8% cineol content in order to be of high medicinal value. Cineol has a camphoraceous aroma and has expectorant properties that are energizing. Purity does matter and It is important when purchasing Eucalyptus oil to make sure that you are getting a 1.8% cineol content. Eucalyptus also contains Citronellal (Euclyptus Citridora) which has anti-inflammatory and sedative properties that makes it excellent for muscle conditions. All eucalyptus oils are produced through steam distillation of the fresh leaves and branch tips. The initial distillation yields a darker yellow oil than most commercially available oil. This is because the crude oil is re distilled or rectified, removing various less stable constituents that would cause the oil to deteriorate more rapidly. It also produces a more consistent product with the characteristic cineol constituent predominating.
